Mrs. Christina Nielson and Mr. Matthew Mileski were recognized by the Archdiocese of Detroit Department of Catholic Schools with the 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award on Friday, May 20, at Comerica Park. Nominated by their peers, awards recipients are individuals who exemplify the qualities of an outstanding teacher and role model for their students in a way befitting of the school’s culture, charism, and/or spirituality.

“Matt has a servant’s heart and constantly looks for ways to serve the school and his community. He demonstrates consistently for the students what it means to be an apostle of Christ, and how to love others. He intertwines faith seamlessly into his English courses, teaching students that Christ can be a part of our whole lives when we let Him. He challenges the students constantly, driving them towards better critical thinking and stronger understanding of both course material and of their own beliefs and opinions. I hope Matt will still be teaching when my child is in high school, because he is the kind of teacher with which I want my child to be surrounded. Matt inspires me to be a better teacher and is always there as a mentor when I need advice.”

“Christina is dedicated to the formation of our students and complete available to the school leadership to fill any needs. Christina has served as a teacher at various grade levels. She has gladly taken on additional roles such as running a STREAM after-school club, managing one-to-one technology for 5th-8th grades, and organizing formation activities for students. She is available to support her students in any way she can, but also is firm in holding them accountable to the expectations she has set. She gives importance to the details of formation and follows up closely with students not only academically but also in all areas of discipline and formation. Christina is kind, dedicated, patient, and an amazing testimony for our students of living her Catholic faith. We are blessed to have Christina at Everest.”
