The 2018-19 was a EC girls’ basketball season that will not soon be forgotten. Not only did the Mountaineers beat rival Our Lady of the Lakes, they went on to claim the regional championship. As the Mountaineers look forward to a new season, the celebration from last year continued when head coach Erin Van Wagoner was recognized as the 2019 Regional Coach of the Year for Region 2. Coach Van Wagoner was nominated by one of her peers. She received her award on Saturday, October 12 at the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame Banquet held at the Auburn Hills Marriott. Coach Van Wagoner’s husband Sam as well as assistant coaches Marc Lasceski and Mary Jo Allen ’14 were in attendance.
Coach Van Wagoner shared her reflections on the evening: “It is incredible to think we have only been a girls’ basketball program for ten years. All that we have accomplished would not be possible without our God-given talents and commitment. I’ve been truly honored to have coached each and every one of the young ladies who have come through the program so far.”
The team also received a special tribute from state representative Andrea Schroeder.
