The ECYD team for sixth grade girls met at Everest after school last Wednesday. The meeting was based on St. Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio’s story, a Mexican 14 year old saint and martyr who gave his life during the Cristero War, a time of religious persecution in Mexico in the 1920’s. St. Jose Luis is the patron saint of ECYD, and his feast day was on February 10.
Everest Collegiate team leaders Sally McGrath and Eloise Lacey started the meeting with a chapel visit during which they led a reflection about this saint’s life and how he died for Christ as he yelled “Viva Cristo Rey!”, which means “Long live Christ the King!”, the Cristero battle cry.
After that they shared a snack with the girls, and then led a fun game which they called “the path to martyrdom.” When either team would earn a point, anyone walking by could hear them yell: “Viva Cristo Rey!”
