“In like a lion, out like a lamb.” Although spring sports are well underway, the predicted return of snow tomorrow is a reminder that winter ended not long ago. The accomplishments of Everest winter athletes were many. In addition to the competitive cheer team’s succesful return to the sport, Catholic League Honors and the EC varsity girls regional championship, several Here are some of the reflection of Everest winter coaches on their season. Many thank to the coaches who helped form the Everest students throughout this season and for submitting these reflections.
The 3v3 league were the youngest Mountaineers to take the court these winter. Everest third graders also formed teams and played in leagues that – while not keeping score – always played to win.
“The 7th & 8th Boys black team finished the season in second place in their division. After starting the season 1-3, they won their last 5 games to move their record to 6-3, earning victories over rivals St. Joe’s, Marist Academy, and Our Lady of the Lakes. They host a CYO playoff game for the 1st time in school history on Wednesday, February 20.” – Coach John Haezebrouck
“The 5/6 Girls Gold #2 Team was a great group of girls and mix of fourth, fifth and sixth graders, many of whom were playing basketball for the first time . The team ended up with a 10-0 record and they were awarded the sportsmanship award at Calihan Hall in Detroit during Catholic League Championship games. All twelve girls on the team which showed great improvement by end of season. I am very confident that they will all be playing basketball at Everest for years to come.” – Coaches Sigler, Hearn, and Leahy
“This year the 6th grade boys basketball team focused on two things, #1 God First and #2 HARD WORK! Throughout the year the boys putting God first were able to attend as a team two holy hours, said a team rosary, tried to make a team visit to every away team’s church, made weekly visits to the chapel, and all the boys learned the great prayer the Memorare. On the basketball side the boys went 10-0 in their league claiming the League Championship, putting up over 300 points to the opponents just over 100 points!! The boys came in runner up in a beginning of the year tournament and are looking to end the year as tournament champions at the Annual end of year Everest tournament.!
“Congratulations to the Everest Academy fifth and six grade team coached by Dave Berney. The girls went 3 and 0 to win the championship of the Everest fifth and sixth grade post season tournament. The girls finish the season 16-1.”
“We had a very successful season with the freshman team. They made marked improvements and learned how high school basketball is played and how intense this next level actually is. There were many great moments in our season including beating two teams that beat us the first time around. This really showed how much we improved and how we played together as a team. There were intense practices that lead them to the success we had. Our final record was 8-10. Coach Tom and I are very proud of this team. Our team is made of athletes that work really hard. I did not know any of the players’ skills in the beginning of the season but I learned early on that they do hustle and enjoy playing with each other and are very athletic. This is a fun team that grew leaps and bounds. Coach Tom and I really appreciate the opportunity to coach these great young men.” – Coach Shivajee Nallamothu
“The EC boys JV team consisted of four juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. We started off the season red hot (3-0) and hit a few bumps in the road after Christmas break with our record teetering around .500% for the second half of the season, but finished second in our division consisting of four teams. We finished the year on a 4 game winning streak which included numerous teams in the upper divisions of the Catholic League and with a final record of (11-8). We are a team consisting of a variety of great players with different skill sets, many of which will be representing Everest at the Varsity level next year.” – Coach Rich Cross, Class of 2013
Honors weren’t reserved for the EC varsity, the girls JV team was also recognized as league champs at Calihan Hall.
“The EC boys Basketball program finished the season t with a 42-40 loss to Dryden high School in the MHSAA districts. On the season, the varsity team finished the year 9-11 and tied for third place in the CHSL Intersectional 2 division. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was sophomore Michael McGrath. Michael earned All-Catholic honors for the Mountaineers. He finished the season averaging 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game. Senior Michael Nardone also had a great year. He earned CHSL All-League honors. Michael averaged 10 points per game. Rounding out the post season awards was senior guard and captain Trevor Myers. Trevor was honored as a CHSL All-Academic selections. He averaged 9 points per game. The varsity team had 10 seniors this season. I would like to thank them for their effort this season. They battled every night and represented Everest every time they took the court.” – Coach Ann Lowney
