Mary Pontillo and Zachariah Brikho

“The virtue for the month of November  is gratitude. When students discussed the meaning of gratitude, they said gratitude is being thankful for what you have, giving to others, and saying thank you. While gratitude can have several meanings, students correctly identified that it involves being thankful and appreciative. They also recognized that gratitude comes when something good happens to us because of the actions of someone else. ‘Gratitude involves recognizing that something good has happened to you. It also consists of acknowledging that someone is responsible for it’ (verywellmind.com).

Most students show gratitude in one way or another throughout the school day. It could be when a teacher gave them a second chance on an assignment, when a friend returned something that belonged to them, when a priest offers confession during the school day, or when a parent makes sure they’re ready for their school day. As a teacher, I constantly see students across various grade levels showing gratitude each and every day.

However, two students in the fourth grade stood out this month for showing gratitude, Mary Pontillo and Zachary Brikho. They express their gratitude by saying thank you even when assigning them their schoolwork. Everything they do comes from the kindness they embody. They’re respectful in the classroom and consistently volunteer their time and talents. It is with honor that I nominate Mary and Zachary as this month’s Mountaineers of the Month.” -Mrs. Motyka, Fourth-Grade Teacher

Connor Anderson

“Connor Anderson never complains and always works hard to complete his tasks, even when others may show their disappointment at the difficulty of the assigned work. He demonstrates gratitude as he always volunteers to take care of jobs that need to be done.” -Mr. Sapienza, Fifth-Grade Teacher

Hailey Camilleri

“Hailey Camilleri always demonstrates gratitude for all things throughout each school day. She is genuinely thankful to learn, jumps in to help others, and regularly shows appreciation for even the simplest things.” – Mr. Sapienza, Fifth-Grade Teacher
