This year’s Catholic Schools Week competitions continue as students early points in various activities and competitions throughout the week. Each day we celebrate a theme, an aspect of Catholic education. Students are also participating in special dress days each day. One the most anticipated activities each year is the annual Pinewood Derby competition. Third through fifth-grade students participate in this activity. Both girls and boys had the opportunity to participate this year in lieu of the regatta races which were not held this year due to COVID.
Students receive their blocks of wood about two weeks before the competition and work on them at home to carve them, properly weight them, and come up with creative designs.
This year’s competitions were adjusted, with individual classes participating one at a time by cohorts, but were lively nonetheless. There was even a tie-breaker for second place in fourth grade for the first time ever!
