A year ago, Everest cross country – then its fourth season – started to win for the first time. Once they started winning, they didn’t stop, with one exception. They lost the CHSL championship title in a tie-breaker to Royal Oak Shrine. The team came back this year with a goal to reclaim their prize. After winning the CHSL league title by claiming first in each of the season’s jamborees, the team headed to the CHSL championship with high hopes but a lot of nerves.
The division had to split this year due to MHSAA regulations capping races at 70 runners. That meant that the Mountaineers didn’t race against half of the CHSL cardinal division competitors during the regular season CHSL meets. They knew that University Liggett would give them close competition. The team traveled to Gross Pointe for an invite the Knights hosted and were able to win. The win at Liggett boosted their confidence but also let them know what a strong team Liggett had this season.
On Saturday, October 17, the Mountaineers headed to Goodells County Park and claimed the team’s first CHSL championship title. The team was also awarded its fourth Mark Carpenter Sportsmanship award, as nominated by the league’s coaches. The team now shifts their focus to the MHSAA post-season tournament beginning this week. Congratulations, Mountaineers!
