Growth Mindset in the New Year

Mrs. Hickey, EA Guidance Counselor, visited Mrs. Nielson’s fifth-grade class to discuss what it means to have a growth mindset. The students learned how negative thoughts and fixed mindsets impact learning. They discussed how to change negative thoughts to positive and encouraging thoughts. They also learned about Neuroplasticity of the brain and that learning new and challenging things helps our minds to grow and stretch, especially when we make mistakes. Helping students develop a growth mindset will help them persevere when they face adversity. They were presented with a “Big Life Journal” to help foster the habits of having a growth mindset through out the school year.
