Last month, a group of young men who will be the seniors on the 2015 Everest Football team — Jorge Dominguez, Isaiah Hellner, Dan DeWitt, Andrew Hayosh, and Xavier Engle – visited the Sarah Fisher Center in Detroit to help with the Children’s After-School Program.  Accompanied by Father Aaron Smith LC, the players served as tutors, with the goal of providing “encouragement, motivation and support for learning achievement.” The After School program is a “community based, individualized after-school and summer education experience for children in grades 1-5, designed to offer year-round reading and math skill building.”

Here are some of their reactions to the experience:

Xavier Engle said, “It was a great experience to help tutor these kids in Detroit.  On this little trip I realized how lucky I am to have the education I have.  It felt great to give back to the community and see smiles on the kid’s faces.”

Jorge Dominguez said, “The kids were awesome and it was a very successful mission.”

Andrew Hayosh said, “The kids were great to be around and extremely happy.  Going into the school I was worried that I would not be able to relate well with them.  I was impressed how well it went working one on one with the students and it made me feel very blessed to have the opportunity to help.”
