On Wednesday May 8, 2013, the boys on the Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes/Everest Collegiate Track & Field team made history; for the first time they won the CHSL Co-Ed Sectional championship by defeating Cabrini HS 68 to 60. Several athletes had season best performances which enabled that team to earn the victory. The meet came down to the final event with Lakes holding a slim three point lead heading into the winner take all 1600m relay. The boys (Garrett Ross (OLL), Elliot Fenske (EC), Justin Grenn (OLL), and Ian New (OLL)) ran very well and outdistanced Cabrini winning by five seconds. First place finishes included the 3200m relay team of Gabe Fenske (EC), Elliot Fenske (EC), Justin Grenn (OLL), and Ian New (OLL). Sean Thomas (OLL) won both the 100m and 200m while Justin hung on to just edge Cabrini by less than a second in the 400m. Garrett Ross added first place finishes in the high jump, long jump, and 110m hurdles.
On the girl’s side, Lakes/Everest defeated Cabrini 70 to 55 and earned a 3 way tie for the sectional championship. Ava Doetsch (OLL) lead the way winning the 100m, 400m along with being on winning 3200m & 1600m relay teams. Angela Cunningham (EC) took first in the 200m and was on winning 800m (Sara Rembold (EC), Kim Suran (EC), Jessica Parry (OLL) ) and 400m relay(Sara Rembold, Kim Suran, Lindsay Ross (OLL)) Tessa Fornari (OLL) won the 1600m, 800m and 3200m runs (setting new school records in the 1600m and 800m) along with leading off the 3200m relay. Emma Dietz (EC) placed first in the long jump and finished 2nd in the 100, 200 and 400m races.
It was a great way to wrap up the sectional meet season. Regionals and League championship meets are in the next two weeks followed by the state championships on June 1.
